OCT. 15,1980 Price 10c Per Cop,’ Weather Monday: high 69, low 45. Tuesday was another perfect day. Iran claims victories over Iranian forces. Iraq said Monday its forces built two new pontoon bridges across the Karum River, a natural barrier guarding the Iranian cities of Abadan and Khorramshahr. The Cuban government announced Monday it will pardon all U. S. citizens serving prison terms on the island. There are 33 in all and some of them may not return to the U. S. since some have time still to serve in American jails. Miss Grace White of Lawrenceville, N. J. is visiting her mother, Mrs. Martha White. A note from Mrs. J. R. Pershall (Nancy) of Asheville reports that the show “An Evening With Cole Porter" was great in its Asheville appearance. She said that she was proud that she had talked Gene Warner into bringing it up there. She added that she sure missed Tryon, and her friends there. The Peace Corps is celebrating its 20th birthday. There will be live Blue Grass entertainment beginning at6p.m. Landrum Band Wins Honors The Landrum High School Band was 2nd overall Saturday in Class IV at Laurens They won first in the Flag Line and 1st in the Horn Line. Special Meeting For Tryon School Bd. The Tryon School Board will have a special meeting Monday at 12 noon at the Tryon High School to take action on the renovation of the Tryon School auditorium. Polk County Chamber Elects Officers Phillip D. Walker was elected President of the Polk County Chamber of Commerce a recent meeting. Other o i elected were Robert Kinney. Pres ; Maggie Kelly. Sec and Wanda Wilson, Treas Boara members are Homer Jones Mike Sheehan. Ralph Arledg and Bill McIlwain. 1974 S. C. Mother Dies Mrs. W. K. Durham Lorena Cloninger Durham, the 1974 South Carolina Mother of the Year, of Landrum died at the Kings Mountain Hospital in Kings Mountain on Oct. 13th. Mrs. Durham was the widow of Wood Krider Durham. peach orchardist and postmaster of Landrum. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Minnie Sigmon Cloniger of Claremont, N.C. After being educated at Startown Academy, Startown, N. C. and Lenoir Rhyne College, she taught school in Claremont. After her marriage and moving to Landrum, Mrs Durham was involved in the development and management of the family orchards. At her husband s death she was appointed postmaster of Landrum and later served as head teller in the Landrum Branch of the First National Continued On Back Page Polk County School Board The Polk County School Board met Monday night in the Agriculture Extension Meeting Room in the Courthouse annex. The Board hired Bill Painter to replace John Burrell who resigned as custodian at Stearns School; and Mrs. Jan McClintock as secretary at Saluda School to replace Mrs. Judy Helms who resigned. Ms. Tammy Buckner was hired as ‘a time science teacher at Polk Central. Topics of discussion were Vocational Education Program at Polk Central; Intersections of roads at Mill Spring; latest field report for the Polk Central addition; window replacement at Mill Spring School and roof repairs at the Green Creek gym.
